Automotive Glass Company

The display business handles CRT glass and FPD glass, which encompasses substrates for TFT LCDs and PDPs. The AGC Group offers glass for all major display categories, including CRTs, TFT LCDs and PDPs, for which it is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in terms of global market share. We are aggressively developing display glass for such promising areas as organic electroluminescent displays (OELDs) and field emission displays (FEDs).

Display Glass Business

FPD Glass Main Products and Market Characteristics

Our main FPD products are glass substrates for TFT LCDs and PDPs.
FPDs are fast becoming a central multimedia interface and are increasingly important as display devices. Applications have expanded beyond notebook personal computer and LCD monitors to include televisions and telecommunications and medical equipment. The FPD market thus has tremendous potential. Accordingly, the AGC Group is harnessing its strengths in advanced float process technologies and glass composition-related development capabilities to concentrate its resources in this field.
In the area of TFT LCD glass substrates, we offer AN100, an environment-friendly alkali-free substrate that is also free of arsenic and antimonide. We are the only company to use float process technology in the manufacture of TFT LCD glass substrates, and have enjoyed strong demand growth, spurred by the trend toward larger glass substrates. We enjoy higher market shares for larger substrates, reflecting the superiority of our float process technology.
In PDP glass substrates, our PD200 high-strain-point glass is the de facto standard. Manufacturing PDPs requires heat treatment at up to 600°C. We are the first company in the world to mass-produce glass substrates for PDPs, capitalizing on our core glass formation technology to ensure a strain point higher than 600°C.

Float Process for Large Glass Substrates

CRT Glass Main Products and Market Characteristics

In this business area, we make CRT glass bulbs for television and personal computer monitors. Each bulb comprises a panel to display images, a funnel and a neck tube housing an electron gun.
The CRT market has matured, and overall demand for CRT glass is expected to decline over the medium to long term. Nonetheless, demand for CRT glass used in large-screen and flat-panel televisions is expected to remain solid. Demand for personal computer monitor applications peaked in 2000, and LCD monitors are fast replacing models with CRTs.
